DUST EXTRACTION INSTALLATION WANDI WOODWORKING ROOM
Thanks to the efforts of the Wandi Progress Association they have been able to source additional funding to assist with the supply and installation of a professional dust extraction system for the woodworking room of the Pavilion.
This project was first raised when the building was designed but due to cost constraints it was removed and it has taken two years for the groups to raise the necessary funds for its purchase. To kick the project off the Wandi Progress Association donated $10,000 towards the project and supplied the expertise to source funding for the balance. The Wandi Woodturners were keen to get the dust extraction in place being a major user of the room and began raising funds; their contribution was an additional $10,000. Now with a combined contribution of $20,000 the Wandi Progress Association made application to Kwinana Community Chest a combined grant system with the City of Kwinana and Bendigo Bank Kwinana for a further $5,000, they were successful. They now had half the funds and could apply for a further $25,000 to meet the project cost. Application was made to Lotterywest for $25,000 and after some months they were successful and had the full amount required being $50,000.
Special thanks go to Lotterywest, City of Kwinana, Bendigo Bank Kwinana, Wandi Progress Association and Wandi Woodturning Group for their financial support of the project.

Thanks to the able assistance of Terry a new Wandi woodturner the concrete formwork was installed and then he guided one of the youngest members Ben and his brother Ned with the concrete pour. 21 May 2019

Now came the real work screeding off the concrete, come on boys lets get it really level. That's mum Shell doing the supervision.
Thanks guys a great effort, now we wait for the extractor to be made. |
Terry had to stay a lot longer to finish trowelling off the slab getting the required finish, it didn't help when the slab was in the shade for most of the day.
11 June 2019 The dust extractor arrives and is bolted to the slab. |
Yes Terry a well earned break from the job! Here you can see on top the silencer facing the tennis courts that should send noise away from the Community Centre. The main duct pipe will go through a highlight window.
|
Day two miday12 June 2019 work is well underway with one of the two main ducts in place and one suction pipe.
Day three 13 June 2019 all the drop ducts are in, now just needing the flexible duct and hoods to be connected.
18 June 2019 all work complete on the dust extraction installation. Photos show a new lathe layout thanks to the Wednesday guys, this allows more space between lathe near the storeroom.
Four floor sweeps are spaced throughout the work area allowing members to cleanup easily.
Above: Thanks to Ken, Les, Rod (WPA) & Allan (Wandi Woodturners) the perimeter fencing was installed on the 24 July 2019. It took about 5 hours for the job to be completed that included fixing posts to the concrete, installing the fencing panels and hanging the lockable gate. We had rain but it didn't deter the volunteers they worked through doing a professional job.
Right: Allan (Wandi turners Convenor) holding a brace while Les screws it in place. The fenced compound will house two wheelie bins for the collected waste, one to be always in place and the other away for disposal. |
New lathe layout will be trialed to see if it's suitable for a safe and useful work space.
Each lathe has a dust collection hood that can be located where the dust and chips are flying.
