WANDI WOODTURNERS CHRISTMAS PARTY 2023
The Christmas party was a great night enjoyed by the 30 attendees.
Our convener, Alan Kelly welcomed all to the party and the festivities then began.
After a wonderful meal and a selection of desserts to meet all tastes, quizmaster George
Murphy took over to test our general knowledge with a wide range of questions. It was, as
usual, lots of fun and also as usual, winners and wooden spooners who were all awarded the
spoils according to their scores.
Many thanks to all the helpers both with the setting up and the cleaning up at the end of the
night.
Merry Christmas to All.

WANDI GROUP AGM 2023
HELD ON 20TH JULY
THE FOLLOWING AWARDS WERE PRESENTED
George Murphy member number 3055 - Merit Award
From the day George Murphy joined the Association he has been a positive force through his strong support for group activities, his personable, supportive, fair and even-handed style and his gentle leadership, characterise his approach to all that he undertakes. George is an excellent example of what a good group member should be – forward thinking, quietly confident, competent, collaborative, respectful of others, and respected by them in turn. His qualities have been much in evidence in the period that he has been convener of the Wandi Group. His outstanding performance in that role, as in all group and wider Association activities, has been exemplary and in the unanimous opinion of his group, make him a worthy candidate for a Merit Award. |
George was also awarded the Jack de Vos Award –
Jack de Vos a member of Wandi Woodturners was an outstanding pioneer of wood turning in Western Australia, his work being recognised nationally and internationally as well as locally. The Jack de Vos Award honours his memory by recognising a Wandi member who has made an outstanding contribution to the activities of the Wandi Woodturning Group. The award may be conferred no more than once annually, usually at an AGM, selection being by the management committee through majority vote. The award consists of a framed certificate specifying the reasons for the award and signed by the group’s convener and an item turned by one of Wandi’s turners, commissioned by the convener on the advice of the management committee. Recipients of the award will have their name and year of the award mounted on Wandi’s Honour Board. This year’s award item was turned by Colin Truscett. |
Alan Roberts member number 1798 - Merit Award
Alan has been a valuable and valued member of the Wandi wood turning community for the last 23 years. He has been, in his own words, secretary, convenor, and general dogsbody. Alan was secretary and convenor at Wandi for three years between 2005 and 2008. As a dogsbody, Alan has been a long serving and active participant in Wandi’s hands-on- group, frequently demonstrating and always mentoring. He initiated the very successful woman’s group which attracted many new members to Wandi and now having achieved its purpose has been integrated. Alan served on the WAWA Committee of Management as a member and was registrar and president from 2010 to 2012. In those positions he ran a series of one day training courses led by WAWA’s finest professional turners. Always willing to help out in whatever way he can, Alan is well and truly worthy of recognition through the Association’s Merit Award. |

The Wandi Woodturning Club is an affiliated club with the Western Australian Woodturners Association (WAWA). We operate under their constitution and avail the benefits of the extended family of woodturning clubs (WAWA) throughout Western Australia. Our club is made up of approximately 70 members some attend from other closer groups of WAWA but generally our members travel from Wandi, Kwinana, Rockingham, Cockburn, Gosnells and further afield.
The group is made up of experienced turners who have been turning for only weeks to 30 years plus. Professional turners regularly demonstrate their skills along with experienced hobby turners; all are there to lend a hand sharing their skills with others. Our hands on sessions are for beginners and experienced turners alike and with a healthy club fellowship some come for a chat and a cuppa.
