JUST A SAMPLE OF WANDI WOODTURNING CLUBS WEDNESDAY GROUP MEMBERS AND THEIR WORK.
Graham Ding has been a member of WAWA and Wandi Club for 10 years he joined so he could bring his grandson Nick along keeping him on the straight and narrow. Nick enjoyed it and was a good turner making a lot of pens with Graham under the guidance of Dave Munday. Nick drifted away from turning but is still doing well working full time.
Graham had an unusual introduction to wood turning by helping his brother Darryl lift an old Tough lathe onto the back of a tip truck, its destination the family farm at Eneabba for his Dad. The lathe is now Grahams and he still uses it today.
Grahams Dad along with Keith McQueen were founding members of WAWA back in the 70's. Graham moved to Perth, losing touch with the lathe. Later his Dad retired to Geraldton and Graham became the recipient of a few plant stands, etc. no surprise there. After his Dad passed on Graham inherited the old Tough lathe and all the other bits and pieces that make good wood turners and it was carted to Safety Bay and stuck in the shed “what the hell am I gunna do with it now”. It sat for a while then Graham built a lean-to on the shed to house it, joined a Tafe course at Mandurah High School and learnt the basics of turning so he could then teach myself, then made a few bits and pieces to sell and give away.
Graham also enjoys general woodwork, pottering about making little boxes, needle cases and even a couple of knitting needles for his wife Janet and even a wine table for his mother-in-law. Jarrah picture frames featuring the natural sap wood, bug holes, etc. featured here in the photo have also been a favourite of Grahams. The bird being displayed is cross stitch by Janet. A jarrah framed fire screen featuring Janet's cross stitch of the rose 'Just Joey" with turned legs and a feature rail on the bottom was displayed in show and tell at a Wandi demo day some time ago.
