resource centre mural 2023
all finished 8 september

Around May 2021 the WPA started a new landcare project at the Community Centre it involved removing the degraded vegetation between DeHaer Road, The Shed and Resource Centre. This space has been planted with local species every year since that time with an aim to reduce the fire risk to the site. This is difficult to do as our local flora loves a good hot fire so we planted two species of advanced trees and with the assistance of the City of Kwinana the subsequent in fill planting is small to medium plants. This has allowed the two buildings to be visible from the road and from this came a suggestion from our committee that a mural would look good on one of these road facing walls. We identified the easiest wall to display the mural and set about getting the appropriate permissions from the City of Kwinana. With all the approvals ticked we searched for a mural artist that was capable of satisfying our needs being a mural that depicted local flora and fauna. The artist we decided to use was Brenton See who does outstanding work around Western Australia.
Now to prepare our canvas the end wall of the Resource Centre, old weather board paneling was removed and cement sheeting took its place, a coat of paint and replacement of a few flashing strips and we were done. The corrugated iron skirt of the wall was also painted black to help visually lift the mural off the ground. Next prepare the ground at the base of the wall so it can be easily maintained. Our choice was cracked pea gravel being retained by a concrete path and additional treated pine sleepers.
We can't completed these jobs alone so contacted some locals that were very happy to assist, thanks go to Bob W, John L and Allan W (muscle). Thanks also need to go to our committee who helped where they could Debbie (catering), Chris B, Les W, Mark W, Mark O (muscle) Rod C (advise and whip).
Financial assistance was also sought and Mark W became our go to guy that approached FREMANTLE PORTS for financial help. After a short time Fremantle Ports came on board and made our project complete, a huge thank you to them because without this type of support it makes very hard work to fulfill any form of community work.
Below we have some images showing the progress of the physical works, what you can't see is the fellowship comradery between all those keen to help, well done to everyone.

Last step the mural painting and its opening.

mural painting begins 4 September 2023

Picture
Above: Day one of the mural gave us a good idea of what the mural would look like on the wall, we were very happy with what we saw.
Picture
Above: Day two showed us all the elements in place and a sample of the bright natural colours that will make the mural jump off the wall. Brenton dodged showers of rain during the day to get this far.

Picture
Above: Day three gives us a greater feel about the mural and the detail Brenton is applying to his work, weather is clear for the next two days so full steam ahead, no dodging showers under a temporary tarp to keep dry.

Above: End of day five, its finished.
Thank you to Brenton See for a fantastic addition to the Resource Centre wall, where there was once a bland wall we now showcase a beautiful mural representing local flora and the very chatty New Holland Honey Eater that is part of every property in Wandi. Thanks to Fremantle Ports for grant assistance making the mural possible, the City of Kwinana for all the relevant approvals and to the volunteers that prepared the site and came up with the concept.
